Institutional Overview
Diphu Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), established under the Government of Assam, is a premier institution dedicated to delivering world-class medical education and healthcare services in the heart of Karbi Anglong, Assam. The foundation of DMCH was initiated by the laying of foundation stone by present Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma who was the Honourable Health Minister of Assam Health and Family Welfare on 29th January,2011. The auspicious inauguration was performed in the presence of the then MP Sjt. Biren Singh Engti, Sjt. Joyram Engleng, Chief Executive Member(CEM) of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council(KAAC), State HAD Minister Sjt. Khorsing Engti, Parliamentary Secretary Sjt. Bidya Singh Engleng, MLA Sjt. Mansing Rongpi. Despite initial delays due to topography and administrative hurdles, the project gained momentum in the latter half of the 2010s. Construction and planning were carried out under the Public Works Department (PWD) of Assam, with funding and oversight from the National Health Mission(NHM),Government of Assam.
Inaugurated with the vision of strengthening the state’s healthcare system and promoting regional development, DMCH stands as a symbol of hope, healing, and academic excellence in Northeast India.
DMCH was officially inaugurated in 2019 and is the 7th medical college of Assam. The college became fully functional after inauguration in an official function by Honourable Minister of State Urban Development and Health, Sjt. Pijush Hazarika in presence of Dr. Tuliram Ronghang, Honourable Chief Executive Member(CEM), KAAC and Sjt. Horensingh Bey, Honourable member of Parliament of 3-Autonomous(ST) on 27th November, 2019. Since the first hospital card was issued on 25th November, 2019, a unanimous decision was taken in general council meeting to retain 25th November as the official Foundation Day.
The college operates under the administrative control of the Directorate of Medical Education, Assam and is affiliated with Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (SSUHS), Guwahati. The college is recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
At the time of inception, the hospital was named Assam Hills Medical College and Research Institute (AHMC&RI), but by the Orders by the Governor of Assam notification No: HLB 416/2029/54-A dated Dispur, the 21st November 2019 and signed by the Principal Secretary to the Govt. of Assam,Sri Samir Kumar Sinha, IAS the name was changed to Diphu Medical College.
LOCATION:
Diphu Medical College and Hospital is situated in the midway between upper and lower Assam and is well connected by road and railways on a sprawling campus approximately 1.6 km from the main Diphu town, along the Diphu-Lumding road, offering a peaceful and green learning environment. The nearest airport is in Dimapur, a town in Nagaland which is about 47.3 KM from Diphu. Set against the scenic backdrop of the hills of Diphu, the institution offers an ideal environment for academic pursuits and holistic development. Set in a Latitude of 25.8365°N, Longitude of 93.4303° E and Altitude of approximately 186 meters (610 feet) above sea level.
THE BEGINNING: A LONG-AWAITED DREAM
The idea for a medical college in Diphu, the administrative headquarters of Karbi Anglong district, had long been a demand by the local people, civil society groups, and the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC). The geographical isolation and lack of advanced healthcare facilities in the region made it a compelling necessity.
After years of persistent advocacy, the Government of Assam sanctioned the project as part of its effort to expand medical infrastructure across the state and reduce the urban-rural healthcare divide.

FOUNDING LEADERSHIP :
The college was initially led by Prof. (Dr.) Shilpi Rani Barman Barman, who played a key role as the founding Principal-cum-Chief Superintendent until 31st August 2011; which was then followed by Prof. (Dr.) Arabinda Das until 29th April, 2013 and Prof. (Dr.) Dhrubajyoti Bora until 24th June, 2019. Since then, Prof. (Dr.) Sumitra Hagjer has been leading the noble institution.
Under the guidance, DMCH saw rapid academic and infrastructural growth, including faculty recruitment, curriculum implementation, and hospital expansion.
With its dedicated faculty, advanced infrastructure, and a modern 500+ bed hospital, DMCH serves not only as a center for learning but also as a lifeline for patients in the hill districts and adjoining areas.
INFRASTRUCTURE
DMCH is equipped with state-of-the-art medical infrastructure including a multi-specialty hospital block, advanced ICUs, specialty clinics, diagnostic labs, and academic buildings. The campus supports a conducive environment for both clinical practice and academic learning.
The hospital began offering OPD services to the public shortly after, and full hospital services gradually expanded to include IPD, surgeries, maternal care, and emergency services.

EDUCATION
DMCH offers MBBS education with a strong foundation across pre-clinical, para-clinical, and clinical departments including: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Community, Medicine, Forensic Medicine, General Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Orthopaedics, ENT, Ophthalmology, Psychiatry, Dermatology, Radiology, Anaesthesiology, and more.
FIRST BATCH OF STUDENTS
The first MBBS batch was admitted in 2020 with an intake of 100 students after receiving recognition from the Medical Council of India (now NMC) and affiliation from Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences (SSUHS),Guwahati.
SERVICES
The hospital is equipped with 24×7 Emergency and Trauma Services, Modern Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Paediatric ICU (PICU) Special Neo-Natal ICU (SNCU) and Operation Theatres, Diagnostic and Imaging Services, Blood Bank and Pharmacy, OPD and IPD services with increasing patient footfall, Dialysis Unit, Telemedicine Services (planned expansion), CSSD, Laundry, Kitchen & Mortuary Units, Separate hostels for UG students, interns, and residents among others.
Life at DMCH goes beyond academics. With vibrant student bodies such as the Diphu Medical College Students' Union (DMCSU), students actively engage in cultural events, sports, awareness campaigns, community outreach, and leadership development.
The college hosts events like Annual College Week, Blood Donation Camps and Health Awareness Drives, nurturing well-rounded future physicians.
RESEARCH & INNOVATION:
DMCH houses a dedicated Medical Research Unit (MRU) which promotes clinical research and organizes specialized training in various domains of medical science. Moreover, VDRL and ICMR are taking vital role in research and innovation field.
